Fresh Pineapple · Ananas comosus

Ugandan Pineapples,
Picked Ripe,
Flown All Year

Mashamba exports fresh Ugandan pineapples all year round: Smooth Cayenne cut at eating ripeness, graded to size and flown from Entebbe, because a pineapple never sweetens after the day it is picked.

Sweetness Has a Deadline A pineapple stops sweetening the moment it is cut, so we cut ripe and fly it rather than sail it.

Ugandan Pineapples at a Glance

Ripe on the Day It Is Cut,
Every Month of the Year

In Short

Mashamba airfreights fresh Ugandan pineapples (Ananas comosus, HS 0804.30, the Ananas of European trade) all year round, with no seasonal gap. The fruit is Smooth Cayenne, cut at eating ripeness because a pineapple is non-climacteric: it never sweetens after harvest, so fruit cut early for weeks at sea stays exactly that sweet. Fruit is graded across three export size codes, from 0.8 kg to well over 1.5 kg per fruit, packed crown-on in vented cartons and flown from Entebbe. Entering the UK and EU, fresh pineapple is one of the five fruits exempt from phytosanitary certification, so shipments clear on residue compliance, sound condition and an unbroken cold chain.

BotanicalAnanas comosus, sold across much of Europe simply as Ananas. Shipped whole with a fresh green crown.
Trade codeHS 0804.30, fresh or dried pineapples. Shipped fresh, whole, crown-on, by air.
CharacterNon-climacteric: sweetness is fixed at harvest. Cut ripe it stays ripe; cut early it never improves, however long it travels.
SeasonAll year. Uganda's equatorial climate and staggered planting keep harvest running every month, so programmes hold without a seasonal gap.
SizesThree export codes: 3003 at 0.8 to 1.2 kg, ten fruit per box · 3033 at 1.5 to 2.5 kg · 3001 above 1.5 kg per fruit.

Character & Grades

Smooth Cayenne Pineapple,
Sized for Every Channel

Buyers choose pineapple by size code, weight band and ripeness at cut. See the full Ugandan fresh produce range for everything Mashamba flies alongside it.

01

The Smooth Cayenne Line

Uganda's export pineapple. Golden, aromatic, juice-rich flesh with fine, low-fibre texture, the classic Cayenne profile buyers know from the premium fresh trade.

02

Three Graded Codes

To your specification. Code 3003 runs small fruit at ten per box, 3033 covers the 1.5 to 2.5 kg mid band, and 3001 carries large fruit above 1.5 kg each, weighed so cartons open even.

03

Crown On, Cut Ripe

Flown whole with a fresh green crown, the freshness marker buyers read first, and cut at eating ripeness for a sweetness sea freight cannot match.

Export Sizes by Code: A Relative Weight Guide

How Mashamba's three pineapple export codes sit by typical fruit weight. A relative buyer guide, not a lab scale; counts and weight bands are confirmed at enquiry.

Code 3003 · Small
0.8 to 1.2 kg, ten per box
Code 3033 · Medium
1.5 to 2.5 kg per fruit
Code 3001 · Large
Above 1.5 kg per fruit

"A pineapple is exactly as sweet as the day it was cut. Cut it ripe and fly it cold, and the buyer tastes the field, not the voyage."

Specification & Handling

Export-Grade Pineapple,
Held in the Right Band

What export grade actually means for fresh pineapple, and how to hold the fruit once it lands.

Cut at eating ripeness: our graders select by shell colour, aroma and sound at the plant, because sweetness stops building the day the fruit is cut.

Class I shell and crown: sound, bright eyes with no bruising, no sun-scald and no soft patches, under a fresh green crown trimmed to spec.

Weighed into code: every fruit graded into codes 3003, 3033 or 3001 so the weight spread inside a carton stays tight and cartons open even.

Cleaned, graded and packed: field debris removed, fruit checked one by one and packed crown-on in vented cartons matched to your channel.

Holding Pineapple After It Lands

A flown pineapple lands ready to sell, not waiting to ripen. Hold it cool inside the band, never below about 7°C, and move it at retail speed while the crown is still fresh.

Carriage temperature7°C to 13°C depending on ripeness at cut; riper fruit travels toward the cooler end of the band.
Chilling injuryBelow about 7°C the core browns and the shell dulls, damage that only shows once the fruit warms again. Cold is a band, not a target.
Humidity & shelfAround 85 to 90% relative humidity; sound fruit holds roughly two to three weeks from cut, and airfreight hands nearly all of that to your shelf.
On the shelfKeep cool and dry inside the band. Chilling whole fruit below it trades shelf life for blackened cores, not freshness.
Why Ugandan Pineapple

An Origin That Harvests
Every Month

Uganda sits on the equator, and its pineapple belt never stops cropping, part of the wider case for why buyers source fresh produce from Uganda. Four things set the Ugandan pineapple line apart.

01

All-Year Equatorial Harvest

On the equator with two rainy seasons, Uganda's pineapple belt harvests every month of the year. Staggered planting keeps volumes continuous, so an importer's programme never waits on a season.

02

The Cayenne Belt

The Smooth Cayenne pineapple dominates the central growing districts, Kayunga, Luwero and Nakasongola among them, grown largely by smallholder farms that pick to order rather than to a factory clock.

03

Low-Input Growing

Much of Uganda's pineapple is grown with low-input field practice, and the country has a documented organic pineapple export tradition, which keeps pesticide residue compliance comfortable.

04

A Sector Being Pushed Hard

Uganda's agriculture ministry is driving pineapple production for export, and a 2026 processing plant now links more than 1,500 farmers across four districts, deepening the same growing base the fresh trade draws on.

"There is no more excuse for saying there is no market for pineapple. Let us produce intentionally, fully aware of the demand ahead of us."

Frank Tumwebaze, Uganda's Minister of Agriculture, on the pineapple sector, 2026

Fresh, Not Just Shipped

Flown Fresh,
Not Shipped Slow

A cut pineapple is on the clock from day one, and it never gets sweeter. Sea freight spends two to four weeks of that clock in transit; airfreight hands nearly all of it to your shelf, a process set out in our airfreight export process guide and across our Export Resources.

Cut at Eating Ripeness

A pineapple is non-climacteric, so it is picked when the sugar is already there. No ripening room can add sweetness later, and ours never has to.

Direct Air to Your Market

Airfreighted from Entebbe so harvest reaches the UK, Gulf and EU in about four days, with the crown still fresh and green on arrival.

Cold, Steady, Above Seven

Fruit is held at 7°C to 13°C from packhouse to aircraft, inside the band that keeps the core clean and the shell bright.

"Sea freight cuts a pineapple early and hopes. We cut it ripe and fly it, so the sweetness on the shelf is the sweetness in the field."

Harvest to Market

Cut Ripe to On Sale
in About Four Days

A typical timeline for a fresh pineapple shipment. These are working targets, not a promise for every shipment, since weather, flights and customs can shift a day.

Day 1 · PackhouseWeighed into codes 3003, 3033 and 3001, checked fruit by fruit, packed in vented cartons and documented for export.
Day 2 · EntebbeDispatched to Entebbe through temperature-controlled, fresh-certified handling inside the 7°C to 13°C band.
Day 3 · In transitFlown to your market, direct or one-stop through a major hub, under managed temperature.

Who Buys Ugandan Pineapple

Buyers Who Sell Sweetness,
Not Shelf Life

Flown pineapple sells to buyers whose customers taste the difference, led by the UK. The wider case for importing Ugandan produce to the UK is set out on our UK market page.

01

Wholesale & Exotic Specialists

Wholesalers and exotic fruit and veg specialists who list air-flown pineapple as a premium line above sea-freight fruit, and sell it on that difference.

02

Diaspora & African-Food Retail

Grocers serving African and Caribbean communities whose shoppers grew up on ripe-cut fruit and judge a pineapple by its aroma at the till.

03

Foodservice, Juice & Fresh-Cut

Hotels, juice programmes and fresh-cut processors that need fruit ripe on arrival, not a week later, because their product ships the same day they cut it.

"A flown pineapple sells itself from the shelf: the crown is green, the shell is bright, and it is ready to eat the day it is bought."

Quality & Compliance

Cleared on Condition,
Not on a Certificate

For fresh pineapple the UK and EU border is won on clean pesticide residues, sound ripe fruit and an unbroken cold chain, not on plant-health certification: pineapple is one of the five fruits both borders exempt.

No phytosanitary certificate needed: fresh pineapple is one of five fruits, alongside bananas, coconuts, durians and dates, exempt from EU and UK plant-health certification.

Residues managed in the field: low-input growing run against EU and UK maximum residue limits, the failure point that catches unprepared origins.

Condition is the real gate: ripe but firm fruit, sound eyes, a fresh crown and an unbroken 7°C to 13°C cold chain from packhouse to aircraft.

GLOBALG.A.P. and HACCP: the farm and packhouse standards EU and UK buyers expect.

Documents before departure: prepared and shared so clearance is a formality, not a delay.

Condition and Residues Decide Entry

A pineapple shipment fails on soft or chilled fruit, residues over the limit or paperwork that arrives late. We cut ripe but firm, manage residues in the field and lodge documents ahead of arrival. Our export documentation guide explains each document and how clearance works.

Cut to Travel

Fruit cut overripe bruises in the carton; fruit cut early cheats the shopper. We cut at eating ripeness, firm and sound, and hold 7°C to 13°C in vented cartons so it lands bright, aromatic and ready to sell.

Pineapple FAQs

The All-Year Pineapple,
Answered

Practical answers for importers, wholesalers, retailers and foodservice buyers sourcing fresh pineapples from Uganda.

Contact Export Team
What variety are Ugandan pineapples, and how do they differ from supermarket MD2?
Uganda grows the Smooth Cayenne pineapple, the aromatic, juice-rich cultivar with fine, low-fibre golden flesh. Most supermarket pineapples are MD2, bred for uniform colour and long sea voyages from Central America. Cayenne's strength is flavour and juice, and because Mashamba's fruit is cut at eating ripeness and flown, that flavour is what actually arrives.
Why do air-flown pineapples taste sweeter than sea-freighted ones?
Because a pineapple is non-climacteric: it stops sweetening the moment it is cut, and no ripening room can add sugar afterwards. Sea-freight fruit must be cut early and firm to survive two to four weeks in transit, so it arrives exactly as sweet as the day it was cut, which is not very. Air-flown fruit can be cut at eating ripeness and still land within days, so the shelf gets the sweetness the field grew.
Can a buyer run a pineapple programme every month of the year?
Yes. Ugandan pineapple is in season all 12 months: the country sits on the equator, and staggered planting across the central belt keeps harvest running continuously. Mashamba's own product list carries pineapple as an all-year line, so weekly programmes hold through winter and summer alike, with volumes confirmed at enquiry.
Why do Ugandan pineapples enter the UK and EU without a phytosanitary certificate?
Fresh pineapple is one of five fruits, alongside bananas, coconuts, durians and dates, that EU and UK plant-health rules exempt from phytosanitary certification. What matters instead is meeting EU and UK pesticide maximum residue limits and arriving sound, cold and well graded. Mashamba manages residues in the field and holds the cold chain from packhouse to aircraft, so clearance turns on paperwork we prepare before departure.
What do the pineapple size codes 3001, 3003 and 3033 mean?
They are Mashamba's three graded export sizes. Code 3003 is small fruit at 0.8 to 1.2 kg, packed ten per box. Code 3033 covers the 1.5 to 2.5 kg mid band in 8 kg cartons. Code 3001 carries large fruit above 1.5 kg each in 10 kg cartons. Every fruit is weighed into its code at the packhouse so cartons open even, and your code mix is agreed at the quotation stage.
Is the crown left on export pineapples?
Yes, Mashamba ships pineapples whole and crown-on. A fresh, green crown is the first freshness signal a buyer and a shopper read, it protects the fruit's shoulder in the carton, and on a four-day air journey it arrives still looking cut that week, because it was. Crowns are trimmed to specification at the packhouse.
Why must pineapples never be stored below about 7°C?
Pineapple is a tropical fruit and suffers chilling injury in cold that suits temperate produce. Held below about 7°C the core browns, the shell dulls and the flavour flattens, and the damage only shows once the fruit warms again, often after it has been sold. Mashamba carries fruit at 7°C to 13°C depending on ripeness, and buyers should hold the same band through depot and shelf.
Who exports pineapples from Uganda?
Mashamba FFP (U) Ltd is a Ugandan pineapple exporter, airfreighting Smooth Cayenne pineapples cut at eating ripeness from Entebbe to UK buyers all year round. It is built to supply the EU and Gulf on the same programme. We work with a network of Ugandan growers rather than farming ourselves, then grade, document and ship each consignment. Buyers searching for Ugandan pineapple exporters, air-flown pineapple suppliers or where to buy fresh Ugandan pineapples wholesale can request a quote or reach the export team directly.
How much notice does a first pineapple order need?
Less than most lines, because there is no season to wait for. Tell us your size codes, volumes and destination and we prepare a tailored quotation, usually within one business day. Fruit is cut to order from an all-year harvest, so a first trial shipment typically moves within days of confirmation rather than weeks, and can then roll into a weekly programme whenever you are ready.
